Diary of a Struggling Comics Artist

In 2010, I was watching a few comics documentaries, and I was struck by what surface-level simplicity they often portrayed - "HERE are the great comics, and HERE are the great comics artists, and aren't comics great, and HERE'S why we love 'em!" That's all fun and entertaining, AND I felt there was another aspect that hasn't been portrayed very often or very deeply. The lives we live, having chosen this as our profession, aspiring to create our work, and all the struggles we face in trying to do so. Struggles trying to get into the industry, to forever hunt for the next month's work, getting a paycheck in exchange for ownership of our creations, or owning our created work but unable to find recognition. Not having insurance or retirement, pressures of time availability from family or friends, trying to get into Hollywood with our properties. Validity of our work. These are the types of stories I found most fascinating and wanted to explore. So in 2011 my friends and I began going out with a camera to ask these questions of our favorite creators, and everyone in the industry had experiences of their struggles to share. These interviews reveal an American Dream story, of the successes and failures of creators in the comics industry.

I COULD USE YOUR SUPPORT

I had an idea for this documentary, and without money or cameras or experience, I managed to find friends who agreed this was an important topic to try to document, and we - Dan Hart, Jacob Schantz, Todd Hodges, Scott Panco, Gerry Chow, Justin Sane, Chris Brandt - and I, spent over five years getting to every comic convention we could, to hunt down and convince whatever artists would let us speak with them about their struggles. It has been an immense amount of work, and as we edit through the hundreds of clips, the job has only begun. If you agree that this is an interesting and unique view of the comics industry, and you'd like to see more, then I hope you will consider popping over to my PATREON PAGE, where you can pledge your support in exchange for access to sneak peeks of this project, and more.
